Family, the outdoors, social justice, and math

What I’m all about.

family.

I live in Durham, NC with my partner Chelsea and our sometimes challenging rescue Sparrowhawk. I also visit my parents and brother in Sarasota, FL often.

The outdoors.

I love being in the woods. Whether I’m hiking, playing disc golf, or swimming in a river this is often the space I visit to clear my head and destress.

math.

10 years ago I decided to go back to school and get a bachelor’s degree and my teacher’s license. I quickly discovered I wanted to learn higher level math and computer science and went on to complete my masters and PhD at NC State. My research used graph theory to work on problems in both computer science and evolutionary biology.

Social justice.

Since completing my PhD I have begun to make time to work in my community on issues that are important to me. I have canvassed with Durham for All and in the last election I volunteered to drive voters to the polls. I am also one of those annoying people that calls you right before an election to remind you to vote, so I apologize. I also believe that data science can be a powerful tool to identify and address social issues.
